The role of Ukrainian higher education in the consolidation of society in the 1990s

Abstract
Abstract. The article analyzes the activities of Ukrainian higher education institutions in the 1990s in the context of consolidating Ukrainian society after the collapse of the USSR. It identifies the factors influencing the impact of Ukrainian universities on society, taking into account the nature and timing of their actions and outlining the scope of such influence. The purpose of the study is to determine the possibilities and nature of the influence of higher education on the consolidation of Ukrainian society during the 1990s, considering the consequences of the USSR’s collapse and the restoration of state-building in Ukraine. The scientific novelty lies in outlining the means by which Ukrainian universities influenced societal consolidation during the 1990s, identifying the nature of this influence, and its consequences in the context of state-building. Conclusions. The author establishes that during the 1990s, Ukrainian higher education made significant efforts to form a Ukrainian-centric worldview among youth, particularly through the teaching of updated courses on Ukrainian history, world history, and the history of the state and law of Ukraine. The increased focus on Ukrainian history was associated with the so-called «archival revolution», which allowed researchers to analyze previously classified documents and shed light on lesser-known aspects of national history in the context of the Ukrainian people’s state-building efforts. It is noted that the Ukrainian-centric perspective on state-building was closely tied to the teaching of history. The teaching of Ukrainian history in universities had certain regional specifics in eastern and western Ukraine. During the 1990s, Ukrainian universities contributed to reshaping the pantheon of heroes in Ukrainian society and reassessing many events and facts of national history. However, the burden of Soviet identity still noticeably influenced the way many higher education instructors carried out their professional duties.
