Abstract
Abstract. The purpose of the article is a comprehensive study of the image of the history of the reign of Prince Roman Mstislavich in the Galicia-Volyn state and the struggle for his inheritance in the first third of the 13th century reflected in the works of the Polish historian Felix Konechny. The methodological basis of the study is the general scientific principles of historicism, objectivism and reliance on source material, combined with the use of general and special scientific methods of work, namely historiographic analysis and synthesis, genetic, historical-comparative and biographical methods, criticism of historical sources. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that for the first time in domestic historiographic studies, the specificity of the scientific approaches of the Polish researcher F. Konechny to the depiction of the figure of Prince Roman Mstislavich and the historical processes that unfolded in the territories of Galicia and Volhynia in the first third of the 13th century is considered. As a result, it is noted that the history of the reign of Prince Roman Mstislavich and the struggle for his inheritance occupied a prominent place in F. Konechny's reflections on the historical processes that unfolded in Eastern and Central Europe. The Polish historian mostly portrayed the Galician-Volhynian ruler in the image of an eastern despot and a bloody barbarian who threatened European civilization in the image of Poland. In turn, the Polish rulers were portrayed as noble fighters for truth and suzerains of the western lands of Rus, whose fate they constantly decided. Thus, it is noted that in the historical studies of F. Konechny, his significant tendency to construct generalizations and attempts to determine general patterns is noticeable, which were built on a selective attitude to facts and their rather one-sided interpretation. This approach allowed F. Konechny to build quite coherent concepts of historical development, which, however, often had its downside of simplification and distortion of historical reality. The researcher's tendency to interpret events and processes through the prism of his own right-nationalist views and even a biased racial approach, which was an element of the civilizational theory he developed, is noticeable.
