Film «The Lost Letter»: image indestructibility

Abstract
The article analyzes the movie «The Lost Letter» directed by Borys Ivchenko, as an outstanding example of the Ukrainian poetic cinema that praised history of the Ukrainian people. It is through play with images, characters and music – the director managed to represent the invincibility of the Cossack spirit.
The 1960s were marked by the rapid development of the Ukrainian poetic cinema. This unique phenomenon was caused by the growth of the national idea over universal and, therefore, the separation of national history, traditions, culture and international perception of life. In the movies of the Ukrainian poetic cinema a history becomes material for thinking on the nature of the people, the scope of the search of their own identity.
In «The Lost Letter» the director impeccable reproduces the atmosphere of Gogol's «Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka», involving as the most novel and direct sources which turned Gogol: interludes, den, travelling clerks creativity XVII–XVIII centuries, as well as a range folk rituals, songs, proverbs and jokes.
The movie is called probably the best description of the Ukrainian psychological archetype in films. The movie was an occasion to express own attitude to the Ukrainian history, the attitude is respectful. Because of the oppression of censorship not all that was filmed, became the movie.
In a movie – an open space, a characteristic «national» landscape, authentic costumes (they were given by Poltava Local History Museum, which was a collection of costumes and weapons of reign of Hetmans). All this, along with energetic music «Zaporizhia march» created the necessary mood.
Despite the fact that the movie because of prohibition against movie, came out only twelve years, it can claim to be groundbreaking period in the history of the Ukrainian cinema.
