Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to comprehend the modern historiography of the development of Ukrainian science in Eastern Galicia of the autonomous period. The methodological basis of the work is an interdisciplinary approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the structural and functional system analysis of historiographical facts and the method of critical analysis of documentary material. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the study of a little-known problem of the features of the modern historiographical comprehension of the problems of the development of Ukrainian science in Eastern Galicia during the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Conclusions. As a result, considerable attention of modern scientists to the diverse aspects, organizational forms and everyday practices of the scientific environment of Eastern Galicia during the autonomous period has been analyzed. Thus, significant developments have been created to date in the field of studying the personal, sectoral and institutional levels of scientific activity of the Ukrainian community in Eastern Galicia. Taken together, this gives grounds for well-founded conclusions about the decisive role of the region in the processes of modernization of the intellectual and scientific culture of the indigenous people of the Habsburg province. At the same time, many research topics still await detailed study. First of all, the need to create fundamental monographs dedicated to the activities of key scientific institutions (primarily the Shevchenko Scientific Society) remains urgent. Leading scientific periodicals also require special attention and comprehensive coverage (for example, “Herald of the SSS”, “Chasopis Pravnycha i Ekonomichna”, “Studies from the Field of Social Sciences and Statistics”). There is also a lack of synthetic works on the history of the formation of natural and technical disciplines, the active development of which began precisely during the era of autonomy. The outlined gaps indicate the need for closer interdisciplinary interaction between specialists and coordination of their research efforts.
