Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s scientific and organizational work within the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (AUAS): a review of modern historiography
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract. The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the process by which Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s scientific and organizational work within the AUAS has been researched in modern Ukrainian historiography. The research methodology involves the use of the principles of objectivity, historicism, and systematicity, as well as general scientific and special-historical methods typical for historiographical research. The scientific novelty of the article lies in its examination of the relatively underexplored problem of the reception of Hrushevsky’s activities at the AUAS. Conclusion. We have observed that in recent historiography, the issue of Hrushevsky’s scientific and organizational work during the final period of his career has attracted considerable scholarly interest. This surge of reflection has been facilitated by the discovery and incorporation into scholarly circulation of a remarkable range of previously unknown sources: materials from institutional document circulation, records from Soviet special services, the epistolary correspondence of contemporary intellectuals, receptive texts, and more. As a result of this “archival revolution,” contemporary science has succeeded in reconstructing, with considerable detail, various aspects of Hrushevsky’s contributions: the development of scientific and research institutions, the activities of individual sections and commissions under his leadership, his extensive publishing endeavors, the establishment of a scientific school, and the broader phenomenon of Hrushevsky as an organizer of scientific life. Nevertheless, the existing archival potential and the discussions underway highlight promising directions for further research. Particularly relevant are independent studies focused on the functioning of the numerous commissions established by Hrushevsky (such as the Commission for the History of the Cossack Region and the Cossack Era) and titular publications (such as Ukrainian Archive). Also worthy of special attention are the issues of communicative dynamics of the scholarly collective formed by Hrushevsky, his institutional strategies for enacting cultural policy, and the practical implementation of the Sobornist ideology warrant special attention.
