AN ATTEMPT TO RENEW POLITICAL PARTIES OF ROMANIA AT THE END OF WORLD WAR I
Main Article Content
Abstract
During World War I, Romania needed modernization of the political system, because defeats had led to the need of preserving the state itself. If, in this regard, the accession of Bessarabia became a means of raising the popularity of the king, then the creation of new political organizations was much more important for the political system. Thus, a new alliance of liberals and conservatives was established in Romania, which, in order to attract supporters, used a term suitable for distinguishing a new organization from the old political ones – the ‘league’, and also used the popularity of the figures’ names who entered the leadership. The main task of the organization was to adhere to the constitution and laws. Creation of an ‘honest government’ had become the condition of activity. The use of members of the People’s League, later the People’s Party to resolve the crisis situation in 1918 and 1920, turned out to be reality.
Another variant of the organization that was to rely on the broad strata of the rural population was to create a peasant organization. The representatives of rural intelligentsia (teachers, priests) were responsible for such organization establishment. In this case, the theoretical foundations of the organization were based on the works of experienced economists, V. Madgearu among them. Structurally, that organization was extremely diverse, which allows speaking about the combination of tasks included in the activity program.
