Abstract

Introduction. The article presents the research of historiographical processes of Ukrainian Central Council’s military defense policy problems in academia of Ukrainian diaspora interwar period.

Purpose. Conduct a comprehensive analysis of Ukrainian Diaspora researchers’ publications, explore publishing activity of military historical associations of former combatants UNR Army 1920 – 1930, to outline the thematic part of their works, the degree of sources representativeness that reveal the processes of formation the Central Council armed forces.

Results. The main results are the research conclusions of the complex historiographical sources devoted to the history of the liberation struggle that had been accumulated due to the activities of military historical societies.

These historiographical sources are represented mostly by materials of personal origin, to be more exact by works of memoir, epistolary, autobiographical genre in which particular aspects of Central Council’s period of military policy are covered.

This group of sources transmits subjective views of the authors who directly participated in the events. Therefore, it was important to identify overall picture of the military-political processes to analyze materials taking into account the principles of logic and historicism critically and objectively.

Determined that only a small part of the historiographical sources of the period 1920 – 1930 has an analytical presentation of historical material, which covers the key issues of military policy of the Central Council.

In particular, it should be noted that historian D. Doroshenko’s works gave objective analysis of military processes in the policy of the Central Council from the professional point of view.

Conclusion. The author proved the following conclusions: essential part of historiographical sources are documents of personal origin; significant shortcomings of personal origin documents are abstract description of the problem of forming own armed forces, idealization practice of Ukrainization army, revaluation of the role of separate military organizers, incompleteness of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of Ukrainian military forces, liberation struggle period; the scientific literature is dominated by conceptual conclusions of representatives of statehood current Ukrainian foreign historiography; the attempts to create synthetic works from the history of Ukrainian troops based on a limited quantity of documentary material that has identified thematic gaps and factual inaccuracies in supply of building forces UPR 1917 – early 1918.
