Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract. The purpose is to analyze the research on the history of Zolotonosha city conducted in the 1960s to 1990s by M. F. Ponomarenko, a well-known local historian of Cherkashchyna of the second half of the 20th century.
The academic novelty of this article is determined by the absence of a special professional study in contemporary Ukrainian historiography that would address the mentioned issue. Based on a detailed analysis of M. Ponomarenko’s publication heritage, consisting of 45 articles and manuscript materials, the main directions of his scientific interests on the specified topic were outlined. The contribution of M. Ponomarenko to the issue of determining the date of the city's foundation, the origin of its toponym, the formation of the administrative-territorial status and the appearance of heraldic symbols has been characterized.
Methodology. In the process of studying the topic, the biographical and chronological methods of historical research, as well as the interdisciplinary method of systemic analysis, were used.
Conclusions. It was determined that the issue of the historical past of Zolotonosha city was one of the central topics in the scientific activity of the local historian. The involvement of the local historian in the writing of the encyclopedic publication «History of cities and villages of the Ukrainian SSR. Cherkasy oblast» has been highlighted. It was found that the work on this project influenced M. Ponomarenko’s further research on the history of Zolotonosha city, which became the basis for the essay and monograph titled «Zolotonosha» published in the 1970s. The aspects of the city's past that were most frequently highlighted at the beginning of his activity and those that were emphasized in the later stages have been outlined. Additionally, the connections of this issue with other directions of the local historian's activities were examined. In particular, his participation as a member of the commission for renaming streets and squares, whose work was conducted in Zolotonosha during the 1990s, has been noted. However, according to the literature analysis, the local historical legacy of M. Ponomarenko, including his work on the history of Zolotonosha, still requires further in-depth theoretical research.
