MODERNIZATION OF RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE UKRAINIAN SSR IN THE 1960's – EARLY 1980's: CHALLENGES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Abstract

Introduction. The post-war reconstruction of the Ukrainian SSR, the development of the national economy and the increase in the scale of social production have led to a steady growth in transportation the extraordinary efforts, a powerful transport infrastructure of the railway transport of the republic, which our country still enjoys, has been formed.

Purpose to find out the course, peculiarities and consequences of the modernization of the railways of the Ukrainian SSR in the 1960s the first half of the 1980s, its influence on the development of the transport system of the country.

Methods. In this work the author uses the method of periodization and comparative-historic method.

Results. The railway infrastructure of the Ukrainian SSR in the second half of the 1950s 1980s was characterized by rapid development. The formation of the railway network, the density of which significantly outpaced all-Union indicators, was completed. Thanks to the technical reconstruction, it was possible to significantly increase the freight capacity of the railways. Measures were developed on the scientific and technical problems related to the improvement of technology and organization of transportation, concentration of production, the introduction of new types of traction on the railroad, and the railway engineering industry was greatly developed.

Originality. However, in modern historiography, there are no studies devoted to the modernization and achievements of rail transport in the 1960s the first half of the 1980's, which predetermines the subject matter of this article.

Conclusion. Modernization of the railway transport of the republic has allowed to form a powerful material and production base of the industry, which Ukraine enjoys in the modern period
